Dinner & UIs

While I was doing laundry last night, D texts asking if I wanted to do dinner...

Laundry vs dinner with a friend...laundry vs dinner, hmmm...lol...Sounded good to me!

Anyways, we went to Max and Emma's -- chain, meh, okay -- but I liked the ice cream at Gelati Celesti afterwards...and the company, of course :)

I think I've mentioned that I'm a user interface guy at heart...not to say that I was ever very good at creating them, but, like porn and art, I know a good UI when I see one.

Apple does a great job at creating a UI.

Except, there's one thing that just bugs me. I like my action buttons to perform the actions they say they perform. For example, an Edit button should put a record into edit mode, so I can make changes. A Save button should save my changes.

What I particularly dislike (it's a pet peeve) is when the button doesn't change names -- Edit means edit, and then, what?? what??, Edit means Save?

Like in the Mac Address book. Here's how you edit--

And then, here's how you save your changes --

It's just a pet peeve of mine that the text on the button doesn't change.
Earlier, I expressed how much I disliked the left hand navigation bar that Google forced on me recently. I actually switched to myYahoo because of it.

Lately, I found a Firefox Addon that hides the left bar and provides a toggle link in case I want to open it.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9301

The addon seems to work great. So, now I can enjoy the things that I liked about the recent iGoogle update without having my eye constantly drawn to the worthless left hand nav.

I'll warn you ahead of time -- only someone interested in web design and/or colors would find this test interesting...That would describe me, so I took this test.

You have to put the color chips into order by hue.

A lower score is better (never understood it when tests score you "backwards" that way).

You start out with something like this --

Put it into order something like this --

Then, the scoring --

Drive of your life design contest

Should you so desire, you can enter the Peugeot "Drive of your Life" contest, where you design the car you'd like to drive.

I wish I would see this kind of thing from US auto manufacturers -- obviously, the designs are not "real" -- you can't use them as is, but you can get ideas for how to make your product new and exciting -- something the US manufacturers are sorely missing sometimes.

Here's the winning design from last year --
